Caring for Creation Network

Greetings in the name of Christ, and on behalf of your conference Church Life and Service Action (CLSA) Committee.

CLAS is a newly reconvened committee of the Conference, with the role of fostering and nurturing social justice ministries and networks across our conference.  As members of this committee, and with its support, Paige and I have been moved to create the Caring for Creation Network.  The threat to our Earth inherent in Global warming has touched our hearts and moved us to take action. This letter is being sent to you along with all of the churches in our conference to determine interests and needs in the area of our sacred Earth, and what we can do together to save and protect this wonderful world God has given us.

Scientists around the world are studying this problem.  You can’t pick up a newspaper without reading how climate change is seriously affecting our weather patterns, natural habitats, hurting the poor and most vulnerable in our world, and causing the rapid endangerment and extinction of animals, plants and even insects. Many see this as a monumental and growing social justice issue, especially some of the youth in our churches, who will be most affected by this in the future.

The Greening Church Network will allow churches across our conference to exchange ideas, resources, and support as we work to protect the sacredness of all creation, and to inspire and mobilize our congregations to play a leadership role in building a just and sustainable world.

Please take a moment to write to us and let us know if you are interested in this issue. Your responses will guide us in taking the next step. Even if your congregation is not directly affected by this issue right now, your input will still be valuable. In the meantime, we are looking into existing programs in other denominations, as well as waiting for resources currently being developed

This threat of climate change is too big for any one of us to solve alone, but the wonderful thing about being part of the UCC community is that with the grace of God we can all help each other.

Blessings to you,

Nancy Hannah, and Paige Garratt
